If you own or are looking to buy an electric scooter, you need to take into consideration what battery your scooter has and how to look after it - after all, electric scooter batteries are one of the most expensive components.
Whether you use (or will use) your scooter for that last mile commute or for a trip to the shops - you'll want to ensure that you have a scooter with sufficient range & something that offers quick charging.
Looking after your scooter and battery will help to ensure you get the maximum range and number of charge cycles during ownership - this is important as you'll want to avoid reducing battery performance where possible.
Batteries naturally deteriorate as they age / go through charge cycles, but, with a good regime, you can increase the lifespan of your battery - preventative maintenance will also mean better sustained range over time.
Another point that's worth noting - the type of electric scooter you buy will determine what sort of battery you get and the quality of that battery - ultimately maintaining your battery is one thing, the quality of that battery is another.
The Technical Side
Modern electric scooters like the Unagi E250 + E500 use lithium ion batteries composed of 18650 cells. Lithium ion battery technology has allowed scooters to shed a lot of weight - just a few years ago, electric scooters were using lead acid batteries which were significantly heavier, less energy dense and much bulkier.
Fast forward a decade and electric scooters are nearly all lithium ion or lithium phosphate - and whilst all round performance has significantly increased - so has the requirement for proper maintenance.
Lithium batteries have much greater capacities - which are typically measured in AH - so, if you see a scooter like the Unagi E500 with "9.0AH" for the battery spec - 9ah is the batteries capacity - although battery capacity can also be measured in WH (watt hour).
A Unagi Scooter battery packs a lot of power
Unagi Model One scooters contain a lithium battery (9000mah /. 9.0ah lithium-ion batteries). Lithium batteries offer greater capacity, longer life cycles, and faster and more efficient charging than other options, like lead-acid batteries.
In general, how long does an electric scooter charge last?
Before going into the different ways to take care of your electric scooter battery, it's essential to know how long your battery should last. On average, the lifespan of an electric scooter battery lasts between 300 to 500 cycles. That's around one to three years or 3,000 to 10,000 miles. However, your e-scooter battery's lifespan depends on several factors, such as its battery size and watt-hours.
Once you reach the 300 to 500 cycles of your battery, it does not mean that your battery will die. Your battery will simply carry less capacity, so your e-scooter will perform with less power. However, whether your battery is brand new or has already reached over 500 cycles, taking care of it will help you get the most out of it.
Most electric scooters use a lithium battery. That is good because lithium batteries hold their charge for a long time. But it also makes them expensive. That means that the cost of riding an electric scooter depends on how much power you use.
The capacity, in other words, the amount of energy the battery can hold, is essential. The bigger the number, the longer the scooter will last.
Battery capacity and range
Know the specs of your e-scooter battery, such as the volts (V), ampere-hours (Ah), watt-hours (Wh), and the type of battery.
It's important to test or be mindful of how long your electric scooter travels on a full charge. Remember that your electric scooter range depends on many factors. So, getting your true range can take a few trips to get a reasonable estimate of how far your e-scooter can go. Knowing this information will give you an idea of your electric scooter battery capacity and what numbers you need to maintain.
Spend more time on your scooter
Taking care of your battery means you will get to spend more time on your scooter before you have to charge it again.
Most of us have sedentary lifestyles, working on our laptops, sitting on our phones. Electric scooters are a great form of exercise; the longer you can stay out and about, the longer you will exercise. So it's a good idea to get a long-lasting battery and make sure you take care of it.
Tips To Maximise Battery Life
Learn about the battery capacity and range of your electric scooter
Scooters, like everything else, have different types of batteries. You have to know what kind of battery you have, or you can't charge it.
The most common type of scooter battery is the 18650 cells, also called a "rechargeable" battery. These batteries can be set at home with a standard charger. This is very convenient because the batteries can be charged at any time, and you won't have to carry any spare batteries.
Keep the battery charged, even when not in use
Perhaps you are going on holiday and will be out of town for a while, but remember, even when you are not using your electric scooter, don't let it sit there with an almost drained battery. Make sure that it is at least 40-50% charged. Better yet, fully charge it before storing it for a long time.
Lithium-ion batteries tend to last longer when it has stored charge, so charge your battery at least every 30 days if it is not used regularly or for a long time. This way, your battery can retain its capacity and performance once you decide to use it again.
Only use the correct charger
As obvious as it sounds, you must use the appropriate charger for your e-scooter. By purchasing an electric scooter battery charger from the market, you may cause severe damage. Eventually, you will have to pay for the battery replacement, which is more than the cost of the original charger.
Remember, it is much cheaper to get the correct charger in the first place than buying a knock-off charger and then replacing the entire battery. If you need a charger, contact the seller you purchased the e-scooter from and ask for the charger designed for your electric scooter.
Chargers for electric vehicles are complicated. They contain special safeguards to prevent battery damage. They charge slowly to avoid overheating. And setting them wrong in the wrong way can ruin your battery.
Keep your battery at the right temperature
In extreme weather, do not leave electric scooters outside - extraordinarily high or low temperatures stress out the batteries. Keeping the electric scooter outside can cause damages and shrink the electric scooter battery life. It is advisable to store your electric scooter indoors so that the battery can live longer.
Keeping an e-scooter in extreme heat will damage the batteries, and keeping it in the extreme cold will cause an impact on the range, so go for an ideal, dry, and cool place.
Many electric scooters use lithium batteries. These batteries work best at temperatures between zero and 45 °C. Excessive temperatures, below 0 °C or over 45 °C, can damage the lithium batteries. The battery may swell, and liquid may leak. The cells can become deformed, and the electrolyte may freeze, making the cells short circuit, and the battery can even explode.
Do not overload your e-scooter
Every e-scooter manufacture makes a load test and recommends the maximum load that an electric scooter can carry. However, it may vary along with the models, generally an electric scooter with a maximum carrying capacity ranging from 100 kg to 200 kg.
Most companies rate it with 150 kg, which is slightly lower than what they test to maintain an adequate tolerance margin even if the electric scooter is loaded with more load. If you overload your e-scooter, it will affect the battery in the long run.
Avoid sudden acceleration
While using an electric vehicle, you need to remember that you are not riding a petrol vehicle; making sudden acceleration puts pressure on the battery, which is also an important point to remember and needs to be taken care of.
Don't drain your battery
One of the ways to make an electric scooter battery last longer is never to drain it. Fully draining then fully charging a battery may suit some devices, but that's not the case for electric scooter batteries. Try to keep the battery above a 10% to 40% charge.
Try not to use the fastest speed mode when riding or climbing steep hills, especially when your e-scooter is not made for climbing. Doing this will strain your battery and drain your battery faster.
Ultimately, the best way to avoid draining your battery is to charge it after every use. This way, you know that your electric scooter always has a charge.
Moreover, you can always grab your e-scooter and go when you are in a hurry since it's already fully charged.
Charge your electric scooter regularly
Charging your battery often will avoid a drained battery and maximize your electric scooter battery life. Even if there's still a lot of battery charge left on your electric scooter after a whole day of traveling, make it a point still to charge it at the end of the day.
Doing this will put less stress on your battery and maintain your battery's optimal condition. Think of it this way: a person eating three times a day has sustained energy and performance throughout the day. Meanwhile, a person who only eats once a day will become sluggish and unable to perform.
Avoid overcharging your electric scooter battery
While it's essential to charge your battery regularly, it's equally important not to overcharge it as well. Once it's fully charged, disconnect it immediately from the plug or cable. Manufacturers share your battery's average or maximum charging time, so make sure to keep an eye on your battery when time is almost up.
Take note that if your battery is charging longer than recommended, your electric scooter battery might be defective or near the end of its lifespan. When this happens to you, it's time to replace your battery.
